Delays Due to Fog

Why does fog cause so many flight delays?

Safety is first and foremost when it comes to flying. Low visibility conditions are simply not safe flying conditions, as neither the pilot nor air traffic controllers have any visibility. Foggy conditions make it incredibly unsafe to take off or land, as potential obstacles are simply hidden from view.

Why am I delayed?

While it may seem like a small thing, foggy conditions can set off a domino effect on flights taking off from one airport, affecting many other flights around the country. It is not uncommon for flights to be cancelled in the event of fog.

Any flight that may be cancelled is a decision made by the airlines.

What should I do?

Even if it looks like a foggy morning, passengers are still encouraged to arrive at the airport and check in, as conditions can be unpredictable and change at any time and flights may still operate. Always contact your airline directly for detailed information on flights.

While there is no guarantee of avoiding fog altogether, it may be an idea to book afternoon or evening flights for the day before during the winter months when fog is more common.

On the Upside!

Due to the length of our runway, the Rockhampton Airport has been used for a number of diversions over the years when Brisbane has been blanketed by thick fog. A Qantas 747-400 travelling from Los Angeles to Brisbane was diverted to Rockhampton in 2010.
